Jennifer Tai

My first introduction to oil painting was with a German landscape painter who visited my small, northern Canadian town one winter while I was a teenager. Many years later, I came back to painting upon my return to Canada after a decade spent in Singapore. I seemed to get up to speed quite fast. One of my mentors commented that while not painting for decades, I was subconsciously training for the moment that I would return to it.

In Canada, I studied at the Avenue Road School
of Art and the Toronto School of Arts under some very skilled and inspirational artists. Upon moving to London in 2008, I joined SOFAP and continued studies at Heatherley’s School of Fine Arts. Today,
I paint primarily in oils and focus mostly on landscapes and still lifes (loving the 17th century Dutch masters).

My paintings are a way to bring my universe into
a sense of balance, to slow it down, take a pause and reestablish tranquility. I paint images that are important and personal to me; things that I pull from my past - my childhood, my travels, my time spent living in Asia. Tone, light and balance help give
my subject a sense of veneration and enhance
my narrative.

My work can be found in private collections in Singapore, Canada, Australia, the US and UK.
