Mary Ashby
I have always had an interest in art, but a busy career in education and educational publishing left me no time to pursue it until relatively recently. However, as soon as I retired from full-time employment I started studying painting, and have taken a number of short courses at Chelsea School of Art and Kensington and Chelsea College. My work has developed under the inspiring teaching particularly of Peter Fleming, Paul Gildea and Tony Rothon, to whom I will always be grateful for their support and enthusiasm.
Although I started with acrylics and have done some work in watercolour, I much prefer working in oil paint because of its tactile quality, its richness of texture and its adaptability.
My subjects range from still life to landscape, life studies and portraits. With still life I always work directly from the subjects and usually aim to complete a painting in one or two sessions; with portraits (particularly commissioned work) I take much longer and often use photographs for reference as well as relying on live sittings.
