Thursday 2nd November, 2017, Kensington Gardens,

The hardy November group

Tony Herbert

The three days leading up to our outing in Kensington Gardens were very encouraging – glorious, dry, chilly, wintery blue-sky affairs.  Any one of them would have been perfect for our artists.  And we were lucky!  The same conditions, with a little more cloud cover, more-or-less lasted for our last plein air day together in 2017.

Wrapped cosily in multiple layers we met up in the Italian Gardens Café, just inside the entrance near Lancaster Gate.

Making a quick start while the light was good we found a variety of pitches on this northern part of Kensington Gardens.  We were off with such speed that we almost missed welcoming a new member to the group, Nic, an amateur artist looking to get some new experience painting in the open from life.  He bravely tackled a water scene.  Another artist had planned, during a recce on the previous day, to throw caution to the wind and paint one of the splashing fountains.  It worked well (see below).  Others found more conventional autumnal wooded scenes along the flower walk.  And, as we painted happily away, we were all pretty much in shouting distance of each other.

Some lovely work was done and we got together at lunchtime for a warming bowl of soup to celebrate our last session of the year.  It was very gratifying to have such a good attendance from the more hardy members of our group.  We all look forward to resuming the programme in February 2018.
